(NOTES:
The Sale of Alcohol is BANNED in MANY cities around Costa Rica on Holy Thursday and Good Friday (as of 2012 it is up to the individual city/municipality to decide.  See my not on that list for 2103 at

Also, VERY FEW buses run those days.
That WHOLE WEEK MOST things are CLOSED as most people seem to go to the beach areas or Arenal.
MUCH of the government closes down for that week so if you need to do anything with them - try to do it at LEAST a week in advance as I'll bet - like throughout the world - many workers will be in "Vacation Brain" mode at LEAST days ahead.
Speaking of beaches - they're INSANE - sometimes with people camping on the beach, LOTS of buses parked all over, some places have outhouses on the beach - so of course restaurants will have LONG lines!!  Most hotels are booked WEEKS in advance and MOST jack their prices up 2-3 times.
Also - do NOT even DREAM of crossing the Costa Rica - Nicaragua border from about that Friday before - March 22 - to that Monday after - April 1 - because those lines at BOTH Immigration Offices can be 3-5+ hours LONG!!!)

WARNING!!! MAJOR Road Repair on Ruta 32 - starts January 2, 2013

(ahhhh - only in Costa Rica would they START MAJOR Road Repair - that's expected to take 3 months [who wants to be 8 months???] - in the MIDDLE of THE BUSIEST WEEK of the YEAR for tourists going to the Beach!!!!  [though now that I think of it, I'll bet they don't have as many trucks traveling between the Port of Limon and San Jose so MAYBE that was the logic on this one])

MAJOR road repair project will begin this Wednesday
SOURCE:  AMCostaRica.com  1/31/12

The national road agency said contractors will begin replacing the asphalt with concrete on Ruta 32 north of San José Wednesday.

This is a 2.6 billion colon ($5.2 million) job that will take 3 months. The work area is from the heavily traveled intersection near the offices of La República, the financial newspaper, to the bridge over the Río Virilla.

The Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes and its Consejo Nacional de Vialidad are encouraging motorists to use alternate routes.

The job will be in six stages and covers more than five kilometers. The four lanes of the highway are involved.

Some 60,000 vehicles a day travel this stretch, and the ministry said that workmen will be on the job 24 hours a day.

For most of the time only one lane will be open in each direction.

This is the major route from San José to points north and to Limón and the Caribbean coast.

EARTHQUAKES in Costa Rica in 2012 - DOUBLE the amount!!!

Each dot represents a 2012 earthquake epicenter.
This year saw double the usual number of quakes
SOURCE:  AMCostaRica.com  12/31/12

In this year, 2012, Costa Rica experienced double the normal amount of earthquakes.

The Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica said that there were 11,049 quakes detected this year compared with 5,483 in 2011 and 6,245 in 2010.

And the scientists said that there were 115 events that were characterized as felt earthquakes.

The Observatorio said these are quakes greater than 2.0 magnitude.

In addition, the Observatorio, which is an agency of the Universidad Nacional in Heredia, said that the Sept. 5 quake at Sámara this year was the second most powerful one in Costa Rica's history. The quake registered a magnitude of 7.6. That is surpassed only by the 1950 Nicoya quake that had a
7.8 magnitude, said the Observatorio. Other quakes  did more damage and took more lives, but simply in magnitude, these are the two greatest.

The effects of the Sept. 5 quake can be seen clearly in the number of felt quakes by month. Typically there are from five to seven such quakes a month. But in September there were 28 felt quakes, and in October there were 20, said the Observatorio. November saw 21, but the number dropped to six in December, according to the report.

In fact, there have been slightly more quakes because the Observatorio report was prepared by Floribeth Vega Solano and Victor González Salas on Dec. 10, and it predates quakes since then. There were nine felt quakes from Friday through Sunday, for example.

The bulk of the felt quakes were along the Pacific coast and in the central mountains. Most are the result of subduction of the Coco tectonic plate under the lighter Caribbean plate on which Costa Rica rides.

MAKING YOUR OWN THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION THIS YEAR?

This Is my information from LAST YEAR.  I don’t have time to do the research right now but feel free if you want to find anything out and share it with me so I can revise it!!!

TURKEY’S / “PAVO

Many people I’ve heard from feel Costa Rican Turkeys/Pavo don't have flavoring (including MSG which to me is a GOOD thing!!) or preservatives and can be quite tough, but they’re local hence not as expensive (no freezer container/import taxes).

Sarah Joy heard that turkeys raised in Costa Rica tend to be raised primarily for Christmas so if you want one for U.S. or Canadian Thanksgiving, they most likely won't be at their perkiest!!!

TURKEY COOKING HINT:
Don’t laugh too hard but in college I used to sell Tupperware hence, as UN-Domestic Goddess as I am, I did learn some hints!!
• cook the Turkey breast side down and IF there was ANY way to get a BIG brown paper bag to fit it in (withOUT wax paper in it) – put it in that!!! TENDER!!
• I’ve heard if you cook it in one of those Reynolds Turkey bags – you take it out and while still in the bag, wrap it in towels to soak up a lot of the juice (don’t know why you’d want to soak up the juices as I LOVE a REALLY JUICY Turkey!!).

They’ll prepare it for you PROPERLY – the way YOU like it!!!! Either go there and pick your cut/what you desire or you can fax/call it in (they need about a day for this) and DELIVERY is FREE with 10,000-c+ in purchases. They carry everything from VEAL, LAMB, Beef, Pork, Chicken, RABBIT, DUCK, Chorizo, Seasonal meats like TURKEY, whole HAMS+++!! In their deli section, they have the BEST CHIMMY CHURI dipping sauce I’ve EVER had (parsley, LOTS of garlic and what makes theirs so great I think is they use olive oil) – YUMMMMM (sometimes I just dip pieces of cooked chicken into it!!!)!!! They also carry cheeses like camambert 2,200/piece, feta (Roteborg) 2,995/piece, PATE (pork liver) 3,100/kilo), turkey PASTRAMI 6,886/kilo and some other goodies. FYI - Most of the staff I’ve found only speak Spanish.

HOLIDAY FIXIN’S!! I sampled their side dishes like the Costa Rican version of Sweet Potatoes - Camote - 8,495-feeds 6, Potato/Apple Salad - 8,995/feeds 6, Pumpkin Pie (they don't grow "pumpkin's as we know them) - 9,995/feeds 8, Pecan Pie - 16,500/feeds 12, Apple Pie-9,995/feeds 8. For MY taste - their Mashed Potatoes (9,9950 - feeds 6) were the BEST I've EVER had (there was garlic in them!!!).
PRICE: COOKED MEATS: Pierna de Cerdo Asada Criolla (pork?) - 15-17 lbs - 8,995/kilo, 25-30 lbs 8,995/kilo; Turkey/Pavo Asado – 7 kilos/feeds 15-17, medium 3.5/kilo, small-1.5/kilo – 8,995/kilo, Virginia Ham - 9,495/kilo - 2 or 5-kilo, Lomo de Cerdo Asado-Hawaiian – 2-kilo or 1.5-kilos – 10,900/kilo; Relleno de Pavo (apio, crotones, wine, apples)– 8,995/kilo; Roast Beef 7,995/kilo; lomo de res Asado 2k – 6,995/kilo; Virginia Hamp – Tipo/Natural – 9,495/kilo. You can get the Libby's canned Pumpkin Pie filling at AutoMercado pretty much year-round BUT I have not seen frozen pie crust yet so ya gotta make your own.

AutoMercado and PriceSmart also usually sell Pumpkins so if you feel a need to make it yourself, get those BUT they ain't cheap!! AutoMercado had them for about $14 and it wasn't even that big!!

Nasty as some people may think it is, my choice for whipped cream (mainly out of ease [plus I LOVE squirting it into my mouth!!]) is ReadyWip in the red can but lately I've had a hard time finding it. I USED to be able to find it at AutoMercado, Sorreto's and PriceSmart.
