Discussion on Pres. Obama’s Re-Election: What are your hopes for his second term?
MINI BOOK SALEand
SPEAKER:
“Drugs and Guns in Mexico and the U.S.:
A Report on the Caravan for Peace”
Nicole Sault
Drug-related gun violence in the U.S. is rising, but most people don’t understand that this is blowback from 40 years of U.S. foreign policy in the “War on Drugs,” which has failed miserably. In the last six years, drug-related violence in Mexico has lead to over 85,000 murders, 10,000 disappeared, 10,000 orphans, and 160,000 displaced people. 85% of the murders were committed with guns smuggled into Mexico from the U.S.
Recognizing that the problems with drugs and guns in both countries are intertwined, families of the victims in Mexico recently brought the Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity to the U.S. on a bus tour of 27 cities to address the problems and work together on both sides of the border toward finding solutions.
Nicole spent 2 weeks on the Caravan as an observer and interpreter, traveling from city to city with family members of the victims. It was an intense experience to hear their stories as they wept over the disappeared and the dead. It was also a journey of hope, as they organized to seek justice for not only their own families, but for people in the U.S. as well. Come and hear their stories.
She has written on birds among the Bribri, parenthood in different cultures, the effects of NAFTA, and natural disasters. Nicole Sault received a Ph.D. in anthropology from UCLA and since has taught at Santa Clara University and the graduate program of the University of Costa Rica as well as conducted research in Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru and the U.S. Her publications include journal articles and her book, Many Mirrors: Body Image and Social Relations ('84) Rutgers U Press. Nicole is a member of the American Anthropological Association and the Society for Ethnobiology, and is on the national board of School of the Americas Watch.

Their cushion between what the hotel charges them and what they charge for attendance is getting very thin. They used to order bocas for 3-5 extra people for meetings, but if they did that now they would lose money, so they order only for those who made their reservation, and then order extra on the day of the meeting. However, the hotel can charge them 20% extra if they order bocas on the day of the meeting, so they need to avoid that.
