What is Virgin Coconut Oil and how is it Traditionally-made??

There has been an abundance of research in recent years in coconut oil producing countries looking at the various methods of producing "virgin coconut oil." What has been discovered is that the traditional wet-milling methods of producing coconut oil using very simple technology, much as has been used for thousands of years, actually produces a very high quality coconut oil. The most quantifiable characteristic that can be tested in a laboratory test is the amount of antioxidants in the coconut oil.

The traditional wet-milling method called "fermentation." "Fermentation" here is defined as the natural separation of the coconut oil from water using gravity. No machine or other substances are used in the extraction.

First, coconut milk is expressed from the freshly harvested coconuts by using the pure water that is present inside the coconuts. The coconut milk is then allowed to sit for approximately half a day. During this time, the heavier water separates from the oil by sinking to the bottom, while the lighter coconut solids float to the top (curds). In between the coconut solids and the water is a coconut oil that is completely unrefined. The oil is then slightly heated (less than boiling temperatures) for a short time (5 -15 minutes depending on air temperatures) to remove any remaining moisture and increase antioxidant levels, and then filtered. The result is coconut oil that retains the distinct scent and taste of coconuts. This is a traditional method of coconut oil extraction that has been used for hundreds, if not thousands of years. It is a much more labor-intensive method of producing coconut oil, and cannot be replicated by machine through mass production.

These conventions are made up of Heads of States/Presidents from member countries.  Attendees will be the Presidents from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua (wow - when was the last time a president of Nicaragua was in Costa Rica??  It will be VERY INTERESTING as well with a U.S. president/Obama being in attendance!!!), Panama, and Belize as well as the presidents for associate member country the Dominican Republic, U.S. President Obama and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

WHY:

Participants are expected to discuss ways to boost security, immigration in Central America and promote economic development, as well as other issues.

The U.S. Embassy in San Jose said recently that Obama will participate in discussions "on the efforts to promote economic growth/trade and development in Central America, and regional collaboration on U.S. CITIZEN SECURITY," and it's been reported he will be discussing immigration TO the U.S. (there are MANY Costa Rican's living illegally in the U.S. [I wonder what will be discussed about all the U.S. citizens living legally OR on Tourist Visas in Costa Rica???  Hmmmmm])!!!

The Costa Rican government is also planning on talking with him about immigration issues, climate change (yeahhh the U.S. currently has a president that GETS/believes that climate change exists), disaster preparedness, and clean energy!

Obama is supposed to arrive today at Juan Santamaría airport about noon from México on Air Force One. The presidential limo will carry him along the General Cañas autopista and the Circunvalación to Casa Amarilla, the foreign ministry on Avenida 7 opposite Parque España. The refreshment table already was set and waiting Thursday afternoon. A large banner with the Costa Rican colors had been hung just east of the main These are showing up. entry. A small U.S. flag was in evidence, too This is where Obama will meet with president Laura Chinchilla. There was a concentration of police there Thursday, and metal barricades were stacked on the sidewalk. Most have countries that are members of the Sistema de Integración Centroamericana. Obama is due to depart the airport at noon. Costa Rica will have more than a thousand Fuerza Pública officers and members of other organizations in the field today. Highways will be blocked when Obama will be using them.  That includes the General Cañas from the airport to San José The national emergency commission declared a low-level alert for the Obama visit. Ahhhh - life in Costa Rica - or of the traveler - we don't always have access to internet/WiFi

but one place I've found I can USUALLY count on to get

McDonald's!!

Whether you like/eat their food or not, they DO know Customer Service and part of that is appealing to those that need to stay connected via the internet - be it for work or pleasure - as well as for families with little kids as most I've seen have

PLAY AREAS

you can drop your kids off at and get some semi peace and quiet/a break from the "MOMMY!!!" (I cheat - I bring my ear plugs and put a headband over my ears for extra quiet)

And now that they're all fixed up (and some still have the McCafe's which I hear have quite good coffee!! [I'm NOT a coffee drinkers so can't tell ya but some of my international traveler friends and some that can afford to drink coffee wherever they desire $$ wise have raved about it]) - it's nice to sit back in a nice padded chair for a few hours and work away!!!

NOTE:  Last year when I was in San Isidro de General, the McDonald's there did NOT have WiFi which shocked me as I thought it was a standard perk/service they offered.   The manager at the Escazu location said they do so hopefully they've fixed it in SIDG/Perez Zeledon. 


SIDE NOTE:  I would like to hear from anyone that feels they might have experienced the internet going up/down at a McDonald's and feels that it MIGHT have been intentional.  I've heard that from a few people lately.  I hope that isn't the case as that would be QUITE short sited as most people on this planet - at some time in their life have given McDonald's a LOT of $$$.

I REALLY APPRECIATE KNOWING I can count on McDonald's when I'm traveling or the electricity goes down where I'm at!

I hear over and over she is one of THE PREMIER artisans in Stained Glass in Costa Rica!!!

Sylvia does Art, Stained Glass, stained glass restoration, Painting, Techniques Stained Glass, stained glass CLASSES.
  Arte, Vitrales, restauración de vitrales, Pintura a la Grisalle, Tecnicas del vitral, clases de Vitrales.

And she's has worked on the stained glass restorations in many Costa Rica churches - Basílica de Cartago en Costa Rica, Iglesia de Limón, San Rafael de Heredia.  She also created the stained glass at the Iglesia Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is considered the LARGEST stained glass EVER MADE!!

She has a FABULOUS workshop space/studio that you can visit (by appointment) (this was a stop on Molly's FABULOUS Art Tours!!!)

Her space is 2 floors of workshop and gallery include many locals working on several large commissioned projects and the top floor is mostly a gallery of Sylvia's works, which showcase her incredible talent with the medium.  She is one of few masters of the grisaille technique, which is using metal powder to draw and paint on the glass to achieve incredible levels of definition (used to delineate faces, bodies, and more).  The powder is subsequently fused to the glass at very high temperatures and worked and reworked several times. 

LOCATION:  Heredia (San Rafael)
BUS DIRECTIONS (per Molly):  It is possible to do by bus and taxi combination: take the bus to Heredia and change for the San Rafael de Heredia bus which is the prettiest colored bus I've seen so far.  Get off at the San Rafael de Heredia church and take a taxi up the mountain to their studio (you'll receive directions after you've made a reservation).

The Laks' (Sylvia and husband Enrique, from Peru) also operate a social enterprise called Artisan, which employs local single mothers to make smaller items which they distribute for sale to souvenir stores in Costa Rica. (per Molly)

VERY EASY to use!!

VERY used/worn BUT it works good for photos (it has many different picture settings to choose from to adjust to different lighting situations [including the SOOOO important to have in Costa Rica "Backlight" that I don't have on my new computer!!])

INCLUDES a 4gb MicroSD Card (in CR a $15 value)

NO original power cable - BUT - I will include an Universal Battery Charger (you can use it with you cell, camera or many other non-standard batteries) if the price is not discounted (a $10 value)

Video you can even zoom in and out - BUT - it usually has a clicking sound when you play it back so not good it you're wanting to record audio/sound with it (but ok if you will dub over music or something). (someone wrote on a review about a solution for this that I haven't tried yet but he said you can change the AF Control under the video settings to "Single AF" and it should solve the problem)

Door where battery/SD Card is does not stay open all the time (just tape it if you need to [though it didn't do it much for me] - HENCE - the low price.
